How to Weatherproof Your Swing Set

Read over this simple guide and learn how to weatherproof your swing set and extend its longevity. Wooden swing sets are a lot of fun for children. They also look great in any back yard; however, keeping your wooden swing set looking its best takes some effort. With the right care and weatherproofing methods, you can make your set last for years to come.

  1. First: Using wood sealer

There are a number of wood sealers on the market. Choose one that is made for the type of wood from which your swing set is made. Apply a thin coat and repeat this once per year when the wood is dry to prevent mildew and rot from forming.

  2. Second: Treating the bolts and fastenings

Water tends to leech in around the bolts and screws. To prevent this, use caulking to seal the hardware to the base. Do this before the bolts have a chance to rust! Also, try coating them with a light coat of oil once each year.

  3. Third: Keep the bugs away

At the beginning of each summer, spray the perimeter of the swing set with a strong bug repellent. This deters insects like termites from feeding on the wood. Another challenge is to keep insects like bees and wasps from building nests and hives in the set. If you spot one, spray it and remove it as soon as possible so that it does not grow any larger. Put a fresh coat of sealer on the set to keep this issue manageable.
