How to Build Your Own Swing Set

Most children love to swing, and they often play on a swing set for hours. Knowing how to build your own swing set not only saves you money, but also allows you to build a stronger wooden swing set that lasts for years. Here are the steps to follow to complete this project.
First: Decide where to place the swing set
Before you do anything else, determine where to put your swing set. Ideally, pick a place that is flat and has some shade. Clear any ground debris away before you begin to build, and measure where you want your swing set to sit to ensure that you have enough room.
Second: Gather the necessary components and tools
You need quite a few items for this project, including nails, pliers, hammers, bolts, drills, socket wrenches with extra ratchets, four steel braces, four trapezoid steel pieces and four swings with the chains attached. You also need a few S hooks and treated lumber, preferably redwood since it is the strongest wood for a swing set.
Third: Prepare the stability bars, support piece and legs
The first step in actually constructing the swing set is to cut a 12-foot, 1x6 piece of lumber into two pieces. This gives you two 6-foot pieces that form stability bars between the upright swing set legs toward the end. Drill eight holes into a 12-foot, 4x4 piece of lumber that is your main support piece. Fashion the upright legs from four pieces of 10-foot, 4x4 slabs of wood. Lay your upright pieces at a 45 degree angle, and nail the trapezoid steel on top of them.
Fourth: Assemble the swing set
Attach the 6-foot stability pieces toward the base of the swing set. Use a steel brace to attach the legs to the main frame, and raise the swing set upright. Next, drill the eye bolts into the main support piece, and use S hooks to hang the swings from the eye bolts. Make sure to tighten your S hooks and all of the bolts before you begin to swing. Once everything is tightened, enjoy your swing set for many years to come!
